Canadian business group held special reception to study the CCP’s 20th National Congress report
China's Consul-General in Vancouver was invited for a keynote speech.
Wang Yi, China’s wolf warrior foreign minister, was ridiculed on social media when he “demanded the U.S. to carefully study CCP leader Xi Jinping's report on CCP’s 20th National Congress” during a telephone conversation on Oct. 30 with Anthony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State. A Twitter post about this phone call by Radio France Internationale (RFI) has received hundreds of comments, aghast at Wang’s blatant arrogance. The most popular comment reads, “Isn’t it enough for all of China to surround a psychopath? Now they are demanding that the entire world surround him?”

But meanwhile, in Canada, a well-known organization held a special reception to study the document, with China’s top diplomat in Vancouver as an honoured guest speaker.
The Canada China Business Council (CCBC), a non-profit business association in Canada, held an event on Oct. 27, 2022, five days after the conclusion of the CCP’s 20th congress, according to a post on the official website of the Consulate-General of the P.R. China in Vancouver.
The post was written in Chinese, but there is no English version available on the Consulate General’s website thus far.
Attendees included Yang Shu, China’s Consul-General in Vancouver, Sarah Kutulakos, CCBC’s Executive Director & COO, and others.
It’s not much of a surprise an organization based around doing business with China would be interested in such an event, but here’s what The Consulate post said anyway;
“In his speech, Consul-General Yang Shu focused on the contents of the report made by General Secretary Xi Jinping at the opening meeting of the 20th National Congress, introduced historic achievements China has made in the past 10 years and the mission and tasks of the Chinese Communist Party in the new era and new journey. It is emphasized that China will firmly implement the new development concept, accelerate the construction of a new development pattern, focus on promoting high-quality development, promote high-level opening up, and create more opportunities for countries around the world, including Canada.”
General Counsel Yang also told the audience,
“in the past 10 years, China has made a historic leap in economic strength. From now on, the central task of the CCP is to unite and lead people of all nationalities to fully build a strong socialist modern state, achieve the second century goal, and comprehensively promote the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation with Chinese-style modernization.”
CCBC’s executive director and COO Sarah Kutulakos published a commentary on Business in Vancouver on Oct. 26, one day before the meeting with the Chinese Consul-general. In the piece, headlined “Canada keeps falling further behind in the vital China trade game,” Kutulakos called for continued and strengthened trade relations between Canada and China. She said,
“Canada’s prosperity depends on it engaging with as many countries as possible, including (and especially) China. ”
This piece was soon translated into Chinese and published in a number of Chinese state media outlets including Global Times, Sina.com.cn, and Netease. The headline though was changed to
“Canada’s prosperity depends on it engaging with China”.
